This readme file contains the following Shoebox Self-Paced Training topics: * System Requirements * Installation * About Shoebox * After the Self-Paced Training Has Been Installed * Overview of the Training Content * How to Use the Shoebox Self-Paced Training -- Tips for the Novice User -- Tips for the Advanced User --------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS --------------------- The Shoebox self-paced training program requires the following hardware and software: * An IBM-compatible personal computer with an 80486 or higher microprocessor and a CD-ROM drive * Windows 3.1/3.11, Windows 95, 98 or later operating system * VGA or better display (256 colors or better display recommended) * Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device * 8MB RAM (16 MB recommended) * Hard disk space required: 5 MB free on the hard drive, if the program is operated from the CD-ROM drive or 60 MB free on the hard drive if installed on the hard drive. * Sound card and speakers (optional - improves presentation of the overviews) -------------- INSTALLATION -------------- Before you can use the Shoebox Self-Paced Training program it must be installed using the CBTsetup program located on the CD- ROM. You can either choose to install some of the program files onto your hard disk so that it runs from your hard disk or install the program so that it runs directly from the CD-ROM. NOTE: Operating performance is faster when Shoebox Self-Paced Training is run from the hard disk rather than from the CD-ROM directly. 1. Make sure that your CD-ROM drive is installed and working correctly. 2. Start Windows. 3. If you have a virus-detection utility, be sure to disable it prior to installation of this program. 4. Insert the Shoebox Self-Paced Training CD-ROM into the CD- ROM drive. 5. Windows 3.1: In the Windows Program Manager choose Run option from File menu. 6. Windows 95: Click on Start....Run from the Start menu. 7. On the Command Line, type the letter of the drive, a colon, a backslash and CBTsetup. For example, type d:\CBTsetup 8. Respond to the prompts and messages in the CBTsetup program. 9. The second dialog box presents you with two options: * Normal Program Speed - runs the program from the CDROM to conserve hard disk space. * Enhanced Program Speed - runs the program from the hard disk for greater speed. It requires about 5 megabytes of space on the hard disk. ------------ UN-INSTALL ------------ To Uninstall Shoebox Training Windows 95 1. Go to the Control Panel 2. Choose Add Remove Programs 3. Scroll down the list and select the item: Training for Shoebox 5 4. Click on the Add/Remove button 5. Two dialog boxes will appear to guide you through the uninstall process. Accept the default settings 6. After Shoebox Training is uninstalled, click on the Ok button in the Add/Remove Program Properties dialog box. 7. Close Control Panel Windows 3.1 1. Double click on the Uninstall Training for Shoebox 5 icon in the Training group to begin the uninstall process 2. Two dialog boxes will appear to guide you through the uninstall process. Accept the default settings -------------------------------------- ABOUT THE SHOEBOX SELF-PACED TRAINING -------------------------------------- The Shoebox self-Paced training program has been developed to provide self-paced, interactive, training in the basic skills needed to use Shoebox 5 effectively. In addition, it contains both general and advanced overviews that demonstrate the full range of Shoebox capabilities. The Shoebox Self-Paced Training program is based on adult Training principles. It is meant to be: * Self-directing; the user can follow a programmed instruction or select among lessons or look only at broad topics. * Flexible; the user can enter and leave training modules at will. * Review intensive; reviews are provided at the end of each section and navigation aids allow the user to re-do any step or steps. * Interruptible; the user can exit the program from any page and resume training from where they were last working. ---------------------------------------------------------- AFTER THE SHOEBOX SELF-PACED TRAINING HAS BEEN INSTALLED ---------------------------------------------------------- In Windows 3.1, in the new program group titled "Shoebox Self-Paced Training," start the Shoebox Self-Paced Training program by clicking on the icon titled "Shoebox Training" In Windows 95, go to your desktop & click on the icon labeled "Shoebox raining." If you cannot find the desktop icon, you may start the Shoebox Self-Paced Training program by clicking on Start, choose Programs, then CBT Training, and then click on the item titled "Shoebox Self-Paced Training". Once the Shoebox Self-Paced Training program starts you will be asked your name. The purpose of this is to allow you to bookmark where you exited from the program so that you have the option of resuming where you left off. --------------------------------------- OVERVIEW OF THE TRAINING CONTENT --------------------------------------- The Shoebox Self-Paced Training program consists of five modules: * Shoebox Overviews * Shoebox Basics * Basic Interlinearization * Advanced Interlinearization * Making Dictionaries * Advanced Topics and Tips The scope of these modules is described below. 1) Shoebox Overviews (Two multi-media overviews of Shoebox): -- Overview Part 1 is suitable for a general audience. -- Overview Part 2 is a more detailed overview, more appropriate for a potential user of Shoebox. 2) Shoebox Basics The Shoebox Basics module provides self-paced, interactive training on the basic Shoebox features. The basic features are arranged so that the user is taken through them in a programmed manner, building concept upon concept. Note: Training on individual Shoebox features can also be initiated at any time from the module menu. 3) Basic Interlinearization The Basic Interlinearization module provides self-paced, interactive training on how to create a language project, a lexicon and interlinear text files using Shoebox. The language used in this module is Gulah. This language is spoken on the islands off the coast of South Carolina. It is a relatively simple language and has a lot of similarities to English, making it easier to understand the interlinearization steps. 4) Advanced Interlinearization The Advanced Interlinearization module provides advanced self- paced, interactive training on how to setup a more complex language project, lexicon and interlinear text files using Shoebox. This module uses the Axininca Campa language of Peru, which is an agglutinative language with significant morphophonemics. This language provides a good demonstration of interlinear parsing. Axininca Campa also requires the use of special characters. This provides training in the Shoebox language encoding features, which makes it possible for language specific information such as special fonts, Keyman keyboard and character enhancements to be automatically applied to fields needing that information. 5) Making Dictionaries The Making Dictionaries module provides self-paced, interactive training on creating dictionaries using the MDF format. Topics include: • Creating an MDF compatible database • Use of various MDF fields • Use of direct character formatting • Printing an MDF dictionary 6) Advanced Topics and Tips The Advanced Topics and Tips module provides advanced self- paced, interactive training on a series of advanced Shoebox features and tips. ------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO USE SHOEBOX SELF-PACED TRAINING: FOR THE NOVICE ------------------------------------------------------- For the new user the following programmed training approach is recommended: Step 1: Select Welcome and then the Introduction Section to learn how to navigate through the training program and how to exit so that a bookmark is positioned, allowing you to resume later where you were last working. Step 2: Select Shoebox Overviews and go through both overviews of Shoebox to obtain a general understanding of its features and capabilities. Step 3: Select Shoebox Basics and work through each of the parts in sequence to learn the basic features of Shoebox. You can stop and review individual features at any time. Step 4: Select Basic Interlinearization and work through the parts in sequence to learn how to create a language project, a lexicon and interlinear text files using Shoebox. Step 5: Select Advanced Interlinearization and work through the parts in sequence to obtain more advanced training on how to create a language project, a lexicon and interlinear text files using Shoebox. Step 6: Select Making Dictionaries and work through the parts in sequence to learn how to create MDF aware databases, considerations for using various MDF markers, and how to print out an MDF dictionary. Step 7: Select Advanced Topics and Tips and review the parts of interest. ------------------------------------------------------------ HOW TO USE SHOEBOX SELF-PACED TRAINING: FOR THE ADVANCED USER ------------------------------------------------------------ For the more experienced user, before reviewing individual topics of interest, it is recommended that you select Shoebox Overviews and go through the Detailed Overview. Then, if you do not wish to take the full course, you can select individual areas of interest from the training module menus.
