Shoebox version 5.0 for Windows and Macintosh (Oct 2000) The Linguist's Shoebox is a computer program that helps field researchers integrate various kinds of text data: lexical, cultural, grammatical, etc. It has flexible options for selecting, sorting, and displaying data. It is especially useful for helping researchers build a dictionary as they use it to analyze and interlinearize text. Note: Once you begin using Shoebox 5, your settings files will be upgraded with new information for several new features. IF YOU GO BACK to an earlier version of Shoebox and open these settings, THE NEW SETTINGS INFORMATION you have entered WILL BE LOST. For information about new, improved, and fixed features in Shoebox, click Version Information in Shoebox Help. Fixed in Shoebox 5.01 (Windows 3.1 only--October 2000) * Automatic keyboard switching with version 3.2 of the Keyman program. * Undefined characters are sorted after characters that are defined in the Sort Order Properties. ------------------------------- To install the Windows version: ------------------------------- We strongly encourage you to back up your Shoebox data and settings before installing this new version, and regularly thereafter. Be aware that the Setup program will by default overwrite the existing release version in the "Program Files\Shoebox" folder ("\Shoebox" folder on Windows 3.1). To install from CD or download, run the ShSetup.exe program. To install from diskettes, insert disk 1 and run the Setup.exe program on that disk. The Shoebox 5 installation will (if you accept its defaults) create or use a folder named "C:\Program Files\Shoebox" (Windows 95 and later) or "C:\Shoebox" (Windows 3.1). This folder will contain a number of other folders for the Shoebox documentation, Multi-Dictionary Formatter, standard settings files, sample data for use with the tutorial and adaptation, Anthropology guide, etc. It will also create or update a folder for user settings - by default "C:\My Shoebox Settings" (Shoebox for Windows 95) or "C:\MYSHSET" (Shoebox for Windows 3.1). You may choose your own path and name for this user settings folder, but do not put your data and settings files in the Shoebox folder or any of its subfolders. Keyman - Keyman 3.2, which is included on the CD-ROM, has been tested on Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition. It can be used with either Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 versions of Shoebox. To enable automatic keyboard switching in Shoebox with Keyman 3.2 keyboards, however, you must install the Windows 3.1 version of Shoebox. To enable automatic keyboard switching with built-in Windows keyboards in Shoebox, you must install Shoebox for Windows 95 and later. There is no facility for using custom keyboards on Windows 2000 at this time. Standard Settings - The standard settings files provided with earlier versions of Shoebox will be updated in Shoebox\Std_Set by Setup. They are also added to "My Shoebox Settings" if missing, but existing copies there are preserved. They are: BookRef.lng Date.cct Date.lng English.lng IPA93.lng (new) If you are upgrading and wish to use the new versions, you should copy them from Std_Set to your user settings folder. If you have made special modifications to these files anywhere, you should save your own copy of them before you run Setup. Then, examine the differences (some described in the help file) to determine whether to use the new version or the old. NOTE: Any time you wish to modify a standard settings file provided with Shoebox, you should make a copy of it using the Language Encodings or Database Types dialog, change the name, and thus take ownership of the new settings file. Changing the name of the file is not adequate. Shoebox works with the internal, more descriptive name contained inside the file, not the file name. Change Tables - Also updated by Setup are these change tables used for importing text files: TextPrep.cct ScrPrep.cct These tables will be installed in Shoebox\Text. They are also added to "My Shoebox Settings" if missing, but existing copies there are preserved. If you are upgrading and wish to use the new versions, you should copy them from the Text folder to your user settings folder. Multi-Dictionary Formatter - When you select the MDF component, Setup will update the complete MDF package in Shoebox\MDF. It will also install MDF settings files to the "My Shoebox Settings" folder if they are not already there, so they are ready to use. These files include languages, database types, CC tables, Word document templates, and an MDF sample project file. These are copies of the originals installed in the MDF folder under the Shoebox program folder. On Windows, the MDF settings files are installed to "My Shoebox Settings" by Setup when - * The MDF component is selected for installation, and * The MDF.TYP file does not exist in "My Shoebox Settings", indicating the need to (re)install MDF there. (There is one exception - Essential CC tables for MDF are always installed to "My Shoebox Settings" when the MDF component is selected.) See the MDF Release Notes for further information. Note to those who have installed previous versions of Shoebox and MDF: You should consider carefully if and how you update the MDF settings files in "My Shoebox Settings". See the MDF Release Notes. Also, use of the MDF Sample Project (MDFSampl.prj) requires the new settings there. Long and Short File Names on Windows 3.1 - When you install the Windows 95 version of Shoebox (as the primary or only version), the Setup program uses a long file name by default when it creates the "My Shoebox Settings" folder for user settings. If, after you use Shoebox for Windows 95, you then switch to using Shoebox for Windows 3.1, Shoebox for Windows 3.1 might not be able to read long file names in your settings files. If you plan to use both Windows versions, it's easiest to use short (8 character) names for the files and folders that contain your Shoebox data and settings. Old shortcuts - If you have Setup replace an existing, older version of Shoebox, your old program group and shortcuts or icons will remain but the paths to former files may be invalid. You'll want to delete the old shortcuts. To remove older versions of Shoebox - Folders containing an older version of Shoebox may be deleted after you are sure that you no longer need anything in them. Your database files are best stored in other folders with other language data, and your settings files normally in "My Shoebox Settings". ------------------- Training resources: ------------------- * Self-paced training program (Windows-only, on the Shoebox CD) * Shoebox Help * Printed documentation (included when you order the Shoebox CD) * Sample projects: * Anthropology research - Anthro subfolder * A Field Manual for Descriptive Linguistics - Ling subfolder * Related Language Adaptation - Adapt subfolder in the Samples * Non-Roman Scripts and Script Description Files (Windows only) - SDFSamp folder in the Samples ---------------------- Documentation changes: ---------------------- * The former "Walkthrough" has been revised and renamed the Tutorial and User's Guide.
